5 Questions to Ask Before Undergoing Lasik Treatment

Poor vision not only affects the quality of your life but also hampers your work. But, thousands of people enjoy better eyesight, thanks to LASIK treatment that has put them back on track at home and work. Did you know that LASIK surgery is approved by the Australian government?

Oddly shaped cornea leads to poor vision as light does not adequately focus on the back of the eye. Specialised clinics like Personal Eyes LASIK surgery help correct vision affected by the badly formed cornea with their advanced technology.

Here are five questions you need to ask for selecting the right treatment:

  • What Improvement Can You Expect?

The eye specialist needs first to examine you to find out the exact problem with your eyes. Usually, issues like being nearsighted or farsighted are due to refractive error. Light does not focus on the retina leading to blurred images.

Severe cases of refractive errors may not respond well to LASIK treatments. So check the level of refractive errors before deciding to go for LASIK surgery. Other options like contact lenses may help in some cases.

  • What are the Risks Involved?

Any surgery may involve a certain degree of risk. Although LASIK surgery has evolved as a popular procedure preferred by many, you can’t rule out blurred eyes, sensitivity to light, or tears streaming from your eyes post-surgery. Another issue is what is known as the ‘dry eye syndrome,’ which is a rare occurrence post-surgery as tear secretion is reduced after LASIK treatment. But, there are ways to avoid them.

Specialists at a clinic like Personal Eyes LASIK surgery will prescribe eye drops for lubrication. It is better to discuss the pros and cons with your surgeon before going under a ‘laser scalpel.’

  • Is Age a Factor?

You need to be above 18, and preferably below 50, although there is no hard and fast rule. Please remember that age alone is not considered a factor for the restoration of your vision through LASIK treatment.

  • Are there any Alternative Treatment Options?

Your LASIK surgeon is the best person to decide whether LASIK treatment suits you or not. Moreover, if you feel that the risks and costs outweigh the benefits, you should ask your surgeon about other non-invasive procedures for vision correction.  Remember that these other options may be good only for correcting minor refractive errors.

  •     How Long Will I Take to Recover?

It takes just a few days of rest and medication (eye drops) before you can start performing day-to-day chores or get back to work. You may experience blurry vision for a few days post-surgery (soon after the surgeon removes the eye patch), which is quite normal. Please don’t rub your eyes or indulge in contact sports for a few days. You may experience mild pain or a burning and itching sensation for a couple of days post-surgery.

LASIK treatment is an easy and quick procedure that helps you regain your normal vision. While it suits most people, there are a few exceptions. While the Australian government has approved LASIK treatment, it may suit only specific individuals. It would help if you asked the above questions from the specialist at Personal Eyes LASIK surgery before making the final decision.
