Changes In Overseas Medical Services After Brexit

Brexit and its changes have been a long time coming for the people of the UK since the Brexit Referendum result four years ago. But with so many rules and regulations changing, what has the change been to the EHIC card scheme and how can it affect the European holidays of many British people. Brexit Begins 2021

January 1st 2021 has bought about the UK leaving the EU leading to several changes for businesses as well as changes to the overseas medical services for those that live in the UK. With lots of confusion regarding changes to the rules, there is a lot that has changed that has led many to question how this will change their holidays when they are eventually able to travel once again.

From EHIC To GHIC

One of the biggest changes to come from Brexit and the deal tha7t has been agreed is the change to the EHIC card scheme. As the UK is no longer in the EU, this has meant a replacement to the EHIC service that provided access to healthcare for free to those from the UK enjoying their holidays. This has since been replaced with the new UK Global Health Insurance Card system. This covers the holder for state healthcare when travelling in Europe and allows for healthcare to be given at either a reduced cost or completely free. It is important to note however that this style of card is not accepted in the following locations:

  • the Channel Islands, including Guernsey, Alderney and Sark
  • the Isle of Man
  • Monaco
  • San Marino
  • the Vatican

Healthcare With EHIC and GHIC

Before you begin to apply for a GHIC online, it is important to make sure that you are aware of the care that you will be gaining access to. This card is not a substitute for travel insurance, especially for those that are travelling with other health conditions. This card provides you with either free health care or reduces the cost to medical services and medication. This GHIC can enable us to take the stress out of travelling and keeping you and your family safe.

Can You Still Use An In Date EHIC Card?

Throughout the Brexit negotiations, several sticking points had many people concerned as to whether or not a deal would even happen. However, with the announcement of the Brexit deal came a solution to some of these issues, but questions still remain. At this time, any EHIC cards that were issued before the end of 2020 will still be valid under the new GHIC scheme until there expiration date allowing you to travel with ease when all of the current travel restrictions are lifted.

With this in mind, there are several changes in the EHIC and GHIC guidelines that you will need to be aware of when you are eventually able to travel.
