Tips for Living in a House That’s Being Renovated
You know what’s weird about life? It’s all the contradictions and give-and-takes that are necessary to get through it. For instance, maybe you finally picked up some St. Albert real estate and are happy finally to have a place of your own. But, down the line, you need a major remodel done, let’s say an addition that will require adding new drywall, floorspace, and everything that comes with that to your bedroom. The remodel part is great: congratulations! But you still have to live there while it’s being done. Know about the tips for living in a house that’s being renovated.
How do you do it? How do you get comfortable in a bedroom where contractors have been cutting, hammering, and generally making a mess for the last few months?
Here are some tips for getting through it.
Set Expectations with Your Contractors
Before you can actually start living through your remodels, you should know what’s coming so you can actually prepare yourself and your family.
Talk to your contractors about their schedule for the renovations. Will they be back every day, or do they like to jump around jobs? What can you expect next week as opposed to the following one? When are windows coming? How about painting?
Knowing all this will allow you to work the contractors’ tasks around your schedule.
Move Out Your Essentials
There’s really no telling what kind of inconveniences you’ll have to suffer through during your project. So, it will only benefit you to be prepared for anything.
In case the work will require you to change the room around temporarily, such as by shoving your bed over in the corner, you may want to have your essential items packed up in another room. These are items such as daily work clothes, toiletries, and the like.
That way, if the changes are just too much for you to bear, you can move out of the room for a bit and stay in a guest bedroom. At least you’ll have some sense of normalcy there.
Stay Mentally Focused
There’s no doubt about it: living through a remodel can be stressful. Even though you know it’s all temporary and ultimately to your benefit, it can still be nerve-wracking to see parts of your house in apparent shambles and your life upended for several months.
The trick is to calm yourself mentally and remember that this will all be over soon. It might even be best to try to ignore the work until it’s done. Don’t go near the area being worked on, and just try to imagine it when it’s completed. Help your family to understand the same, and you’ll get through this all right.
