  • Play around with hair wash frequencies. How often you wash your hair can have a huge impact on its overall health. Experiment with hair washing frequencies to determine what works for you and your mane.
  • Add a moisturizing conditioner to your routine. If you want a thick, luscious mane, don’t even think about skipping the conditioner. On top of adding much-needed shine and moisture to hair, a high-quality conditioner refortifies and protects the hair cuticles from external damage, such as harsh weather and heat styling tools. Ideally, you want a conditioner that contains nourishing ingredients (think plant-based butters and oils) to moisturize strands without weighing hair down.
  • Target specific concerns with hair oils. The right hair oil can be a powerful ally in achieving your hair goals, but only if you pick the right one for your hair type and texture. If you have fine, thin or straight hair, opt for a lightweight oil that won’t weigh your hair down (jojoba oil, grapeseed oil and argan oil are all great options). For dry, frizzy and curly hair, try a heavier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil.

  • Pick the right face wash- Personalized Beauty Routine. Cleansing is pretty much a non-negotiable step in taking good care of your skin. The right cleanser will gently remove oils, dirt and grime from the skin without compromising the epidermis (your skin’s outer layer). To that end, look for a cleanser based on your skin type. If you have dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin, look for a creamy cleanser with humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin. You can also rinse with micellar water if you feel water dries your skin out too much. For oily and acne-prone skin, you want more of a gel-type cleanser with ingredients that gently remove excess oil from the skin (salicylic acid, glycolic acid and niacinamide are all great options).
  • Supercharge your routine with serums. Make no mistake — serums can make a huge difference over time in the health and appearance of your skin. Compared to moisturizers and face creams, serums contain a higher concentration of active ingredients, which means they’ll give you better and faster results. Best of all, there’s a serum for almost any specific skin care concern, from fine lines (hyaluronic acid serum) to dark spots (vitamin C serum) to acne (niacinamide serum).
  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Moisturizer goes on after serum because it helps seal it into the skin. Generally speaking, people with dry skin will benefit from a heavier, oil-based moisturizer, whereas those with oily skin may do better with a lighter, water-based moisturizer. At nighttime, you should use a night cream, which is essentially a thicker moisturizer containing ingredients like retinol that help increase cell turnover as you sleep.
  • Wear a daily SPF. If there is one skin care product you never skip in your daily routine, let it be a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Not only does sunscreen reduce your risk of getting skin cancer, but it also keeps your skin looking healthy and youthful. When it comes to choosing a sunscreen, you have two options: mineral or chemical. There are pros and cons to both options, but in general, people with sensitive and acne-prone skin tend to fare better with mineral sunscreen.

  • Raise the bar. Today’s bar soaps are nothing like the overly-harsh cleansers from your parents’ childhood. They’re chock full of nourishing butters and oils that gently remove impurities without making your skin feel itchy. Plus, they can make you smell sublime and even thwart stubborn blemishes.
  • Pamper yourself with hydrating lotion. If you want to really upgrade your beauty routine, lather up with an antioxidant-rich lotion after you get out of the shower. Antioxidants such as vitamin A and C can help turn back time on your skin, stimulating collagen production and fighting off wrinkle-causing free radicals, respectively. If you have oily skin, you may want to choose a lightweight moisturizer or avoid applying lotion to acne-prone areas — like the back and chest.

Most deodorants and antiperspirants are teeming with toxic ingredients — like parabens and phthalates — and are swathed in plastic. Building a beauty routine from scratch can take a little trial and error. Remember to give your products enough time to work their magic — at least two weeks for skin care and three months for hair care.
