What Do You Need To Know About The Lazy Keto Diet?

Those looking for a healthy way to lose weight have probably heard of the famous keto diet. This diet includes consumption of high-fat low-carb and moderate-protein products, such as eggs, meat, nuts and seeds, as well as some desserts, such as a keto shake. In this way, it puts your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis. When in this state, your body doesn’t burn carbs, but it uses fat as its main source of energy. This happens because there’s a really small amount of carbs in the body which isn’t enough for the body to work properly, so the body finds an alternative energy source in the stored fat.

Once your body enters ketosis, you start burning fat, thus losing weight. Also, you improve other aspects of your health. Namely, the keto diet regulates the blood sugar levels, blood pressure, boosts your energy and focus, improves your brain health and heart heat, and so on.

However, not everyone can stay on this diet or don’t want to follow its rules, especially the nutrient counting rule. What Is The Lazy Keto Diet?

The keto diet requires that 5% of your daily calories (20-50g) are carbs, 75-90% are fats, and 20% are proteins. That means you need to constantly calculate the number of macronutrients you are digesting. Unlike the traditional keto diet, the lazy keto diet focuses only on counting your carbs intake.

Some experts find this diet not so healthy because not counting the macros can lead to some unwanted results. Namely, consuming too many proteins can lead to gluconeogenesis, a metabolic process when proteins become the source of glucose in the body. As such, they can cause the body to use glucose (the product of carbs) instead of ketones (the product of fat). That means your body won’t be in ketosis. Moreover, not consuming macronutrients in a certain balance may lead to improper keto dieting which will result in big hunger.

However, there are other experts who claim that the lazy keto diet is as great as the traditional one. One of them is Susan Wolver, M.D, who actually recommends this diet to all of her patients who want to lose weight. It’s because this diet doesn’t require too much macro-counting and it’s much easier to stick to. According to her, if you consume a low amount of carbs, as it’s suggested, you will not have any problem and will achieve ketosis.

What Can You Eat On The Lazy Keto Diet?

Having in the mind that the lazy keto diet is a variation of the traditional one, it’s more or less the same. Hence, you follow the same rules, except you are counting only the carbs intake, not the other macros. However, there are some differences regarding the products you can and can’t eat. So, instead of eating low-carb foods, you have to eat very low-carb ones due to their fat and protein content, including the following ones:

  • Eggs – you can eat them any way you like, scrambled, fried, or hard-boiled.
  • Meat – you can eat all types of meat, including poultry, fish, and shellfish.
  • Vegetables – you can eat most vegetables since a big number of them are low in carbs, especially the leafy greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, and broccoli.
  • Healthy oils – avocado oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil and other.
  • Dairy products – high- fat, such as cheese, butter, and cream.
  • Nuts and seeds – you can consume all nuts and seeds because of their nutritional value which is in accordance with the keto rules. This also includes the consumption of their butters.
  • Few fruits – from fruits you can consume only berries and avocados.
  • Drinks – only water and unsweetened coffee and tea.

What Should You Avoid?

When it comes to the products you shouldn’t consume on the lazy keto diet, we have to say that they are the same products you aren’t allowed to eat on the traditional keto diet. Therefore, you should stay away from grains, legumes, starchy (root) vegetables, all fruits (except berries and avocados), some dairy products such as milk and yoghurt, sweets, and sugary drinks, such as fruit juices, sodas, and sports drinks.

So, should you try the lazy keto diet? If you are looking for a quick way to lose weight, then you should. However, since the keto diet, in general, is a short-term solution, you should look for another way to lose weight on the long track. And, as always, you should first consult with your nutritionist or doctor before starting your diet.

The major thing is to intensify whatever workout session you choose to go with, doing so will see your body burn lots of calories.

Also, you can try mixing them with other cardio types. Switching between intensities can aid you too. From higher to lower intensity, rinse and repeat. That is generally switching from challenging to less challenging. Say, for instance, you can ride a bike (find a suitable one for you here) for 3 minutes and mix it up with 2 minutes of jumping jacks. Or you opt for a full minute of jumping jacks (as many as you can do) and 2 minutes of walk-in place. Repeat for 15-20 minutes.

Weight lifting

Building your muscle mass by weight lifting is also a choice to consider. With muscle taking up more calories than fat, if you strengthen your muscles, you would be able to consistently burn calories even while resting.

For optimal results, you can opt for performing one or two sets of between 12 to 15 repetitions on the four major muscle groups – abs, glutes, biceps, and quads. You can do this twice a week.
